The COVID-19 coronavirus outbreak has a lot of people wondering how they can protect themselves and their families – and keep their homes free of harmful viruses and germs. In this guide from The Shirt Butler, we’ll give you a few tips you can use to sanitize your home and ensure it’s a safe place for you and your family.

1. Wash Your Hands Or Use Hand Sanitizer As Soon As You Get Home

The best way to avoid COVID-19 coronavirus is to practice good hand hygiene, and wash your hands or use hand sanitizer as soon as you get home. Don’t touch your face in public and maintain proper social distancing, as this will also help reduce the risk of getting COVID-19 coronavirus from an infected person.

You should also wear gloves during the cleaning and disinfection process – whenever you’re cleaning potentially contaminated surfaces. Washing hands after disposing of the gloves properly will also help keep you safe.

2. Invest In The Right Cleaning Products For Your Home

We recommend using paper towels and a disinfectant cleaning product that includes an antimicrobial active ingredient that kills germs on contact, such as chlorine bleach or a similar ingredient. Clean hands before and after cleaning, and wear disposable gloves. If you wear reusable gloves, use them only for cleaning and disinfecting surfaces to remove COVID-19, and not for other purposes.

Most cleaning products must be sprayed generously on the surface and left in place for a few minutes to completely eliminate and kill germs, so make sure to follow the manufacturer’s instructions for maximum effectiveness.

3. Disinfect Common “High-Touch” Surfaces Regularly

When cleaning your home, you should focus on cleaning high-touch surfaces that are often touched by you and your family – as these are the surfaces that are most likely to harbor COVID-19 and other germs that may have been spread by touch.

High touch surfaces include tables, hard-backed chairs, door knobs, light switches, power outlets, remote controls, keyboards, sinks, countertops and kitchen surfaces, and all other surfaces that your family members use regularly. Kitchen surfaces and food preparation surfaces are particularly important to keep clean.

4. Clean & Disinfect Your Mobile Phones

You regularly touch your phone at home and in public, so don’t forget about your mobile phone when it’s time to clean commonly-touched surfaces in your home. Alcohol-based wipes that include at least 70% alcohol are ideal for this. These cleaning products wipe away cleanly, and won’t damage your phone. Choose wipes that are unscented to avoid residue on your phone.

5. Consider Taking Off Your Shoes & Changing After You Come Home

It has been shown that COVID-19 coronavirus can survive on surfaces such as the bottom of shoes, and it could also survive on clothing. While there have not yet been a lot of studies about COVID-19 and how it spreads through shoes and clothing, you may want to consider removing your shoes and clothes when you get home from any public area to reduce the risk of contamination.

Keep shoes in a dedicated area, and avoid wearing them throughout your home. And after changing, keep dirty laundry separate, and wash your hands after touching it. When it’s time to do laundry, it’s a good idea to use hot water – not warm water – and run your dryer on the highest temperature to kill the virus.
